Brief
History of the Law Library

|
1839:
Founded as the Louisville Law Library by an Act of the Legislature
of the Commonwealth of Kentucky on February 8, 1839.
|
1900:
Louisville Bar Association became involved in the Jefferson
County Law Library.
|
1949:
The Louisville Bar Association along with the Jefferson County
Fiscal Court combined their efforts in the sponsorship of the Law
Library.
|
1957:
The law library moved into the
Jefferson County Court House where it remained until 1979.
|
1978:
The Louisville Bar Association discontinued its support of the
Law Library, and the library became known as the Jefferson County
Public Law Library.

1979:
Court Fees were first collected to support the Jefferson
County Public Law Library
pursuant to Kentucky
Revised Statute 172.180.
The Board of
Trustees for the Jefferson County Public Law Library was
established to manage the trust for fees (Kentucky
Revised Statute 172.200).
JCPLL moved into
the Old Louisville Trust Building.

1983:
The Jefferson County Public Law Library moved to its present
location at 514 West Liberty Street, Louisville, Kentucky on the
second floor of the renovated Old Jail Building.

1986:
An increase in Court Fees for the Law Library was approved by
the Kentucky Legislature - Act of the Legislature (KRS
172.180).
|
1995:
The "Friends of the Law Library" was formed to
assure the future growth and development of JCPLL.
|
2000:
Jefferson County Public Law Library (JCPLL) goes 'on-line' at
www.jcpll.com.
|
2005:
Legislature passes law to increase attorney fees for state's
county law libraries.
